By Ron Campbell, Widnes, Referee for the Lancashire Cup Final in 1984
I was lucky enough to referee that Lancashire Cup Final in 1984 and I well
remember Big Mal charging towards the Wigan line and Shaun Edwards going it to
try and stop him.
Remember Shaun himself was one of the greats of Rugby League
and he could tacke with the best. He went in too high on Mal and i had a great
view of Mal swatting him aside and then diving over in the corner.
It is a sight
I'll always remember.
Mal was a great player and a nice man too.
That final was
played at Wigan because Warringtons ground the first choice was too small so
Wigan won the toss up for venue and also choice of jerseys ! St Helen's had to
play in a light blue with dark blue sleeves .
A great game and played in great
spirit by both teams made my job easy
