Hull Kingston Rovers

Jim Drake was a very tough man. Colin Hutton and my father in law (Roly Moat) have lots of stories about Jim as they played together at Hull and then Jim came to Rovers and helped us get to the 64 Challenge Cup Final when Colin was coach. Unfortunately he was injured going into the final against Widnes and John Taylor our 2nd row was also injured. It made a lot of difference in the final as Jim's opposite number had the run of Wembley that day, something that wouldn't have happened had Jim been on the field.

There was one story of Jim getting sent off with another player. The changing rooms apparently had a dividing door and Jim managed to get in the opposition area and beat the guy to a pulp with blood everywhere.

Another story regards a spectator winding Jim up before a game. I think Hull were playing Wakefield, the player was another hardman (Don Vines). The guy said to Jim: "wait 'til Vines gets hold of you in the game on Saturday." Jim's reply was "I could eat three of Don Vines before breakfast and 10 bastards like you."

Even Frank Foster said he was a hard man and he didn't say it that often about other players.
