Kurt had played the season of 1984 with Easturn
Suburbs Roosters after leaving Cronulla in 1983. He had resigned
with the Sharks for 1985 and was heading back to Endeavour Oval
from his stint at Bondi.
Jack Gibson was the New Cronulla coach for the 1985 season and
was taking over from Terry Fernley. At the time and as the story
goes Kurt approached the laid back coach Gibson and asked if
it would be alright if he played the off season in the UK.
Apparently Kurt was a bit concerned about player burn out and
in particular, his own, after playing a full 84 season with
the Roosters, then an offseason in the UK, and then straight
back into it with the Sharks.
It was reported that Gibbo's answer to Sorensens concerned enquiry
was something like as follows.
"Why not, you did nothing all 1984, so you may as well
go" (or words to that effect)
Short, sweet, and to the point. That was Jack Gibson.
